Chair

Composed of Madrone and Goat Nappa

My first original chair, I designed this as a Krenov School student as a follow up and somewhat companion to my Ebony desk. This was inspired by rifling through Art Nouveau books and specifically a chair designed by Edward Colonna. There is a stately elegance to these designs--the elongation of forms and their firm but spritely stance.

I wanted to develop my sense for curves and chase after the carved details I adore in historical work. Contemporary and the ever popular mid-century trends offer plain surfaces either round or flat, whereas their predecessors offered figural carvings, beads, coves--details inviting hands to explore and shadows to adorn. I wanted to engage that shadow play and explore those carved idiosyncrasies. Peruse the gallery and behold them. I am particularly fond of the little horns on the lumbar rail, a nod to the goat that supplied the upholstery.
